2006 Pinot Noir ... 2006 Cabernet Franc

(August 9, 2014) ... I don't usually visit a winery with their own wine in hand ... But this is the second time this month I'll pull that stunt (in three days I'll do the same at Coyote's Run).  I was in the Lake Erie region for their annual Vintage Tasting, which was held at Muscedere, and had the opportunity to taste two of my older Muscedere wines (sealed under synthetic cork) with winemaker Rob Muscedere himself.

2006 Pinot Noir ... Our pour from the bottle started well but within 15-20 minutes it started to go downhill, especially nose-wise, but the palate showed a spiced-freeze-dried-strawberry that's rather appealing.  It also proved to be quite balanced with good tannins, ever-present acidity, and excellent length.  I found it a pretty good wine when first released and even more impressive considering it's the first Pinot made by Rob.  Throughout the tasting the smell continued to be atrocious, to the point that you were almost afraid to drink it.

2006 Cabernet Franc ... This grape has become Muscedere's bread and butter wine, and each year they improve as their vines get older and their experience using it increases.  I tried this wine in two different glasses, trying to give it the benefit of the doubt, and it the hopes it would improve.  The first was from a small ISO style glass and it showed lots of greenish notes, especially green pepper.  I then pulled out a stemless Cabernet glass and it showed even more poorly in that.   Major oxidative quality grabbed at the olfactories, but the palate had a nice weight along with tobacco, dried raspberry, and red currant, but then with a little more time open it started to develop green pepper on the finish. With more and more time in glass that green pepper becomes more and more pronounced.  Alas this wine did not make the cut and continued to fall apart as time went by.
