Word of my older Ontario tastings has spread, now it seems others are interested in spotlighting older Ontario wines, but nothing beats an original, and that's why it makes sense that I got together with Danny Lenko to taste one of his older wines ... Surprisingly he has quite a few back vintages on his shelves at the back of his "store". Today he allowed me to pick from his vast selection saying "pick whatever you like, I'm proud of all of them and wouldn't be selling it if I thought it was bad". I chose the 2002 Meritage; one of Ontario's great vintages of the early 2000s. There is a hint of green pepper on this one, but if you look past that you'll find lovely fruit, a la cassis, dried raspberry, and black cherry - nothing fresh but with good tannin structure, this wine shows a ballsiness, especially for its age - it's a wine I would not be embarrassed to put on my table, hence why Daniel still has it on his shelf ...
