On the Road with the Grape Guy

Report from: Muscedere Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 - 2011 Vertical

05 Dec 2014

(August 10, 2014) ... I was invited to speak at this year Vintage Tasting for the Lake Erie North Shore wineries (now known as EPIC), which was being held at Muscedere this year ... Over the course of their 8 years or so this winery has proven to be one of the flagship producers of the region.  Its also nice to see the progression of this winery's improvement in winemaking by winemaker Rob Muscedere ... Rob invited me and fellow writer Konrad Ejbich to taste a 5-year vertical of his Cabernet Sauvignon endeavors over the years - here are the results of that tasting:

2007 ... Cabbagy but with great finish, amazingly still drinkable
2008 ... Off-putting, tired, pruney, herbaceous - weakest of the 5
2009 ... Good fruit, nice structure, dark brooding fruit and tannins, still very much alive and kicking; for what many consider a weak vintage in Ontario the Lake Erie had very different results, weatherwise.*
2010 ... Nice balance, good sweet fruit, great drinking wine; '10 was a great year all round so it's a no-brainer that this one stands up. ***
2011 ... Another off-vintage red that Rob has showed a deft hand with ... fully dark fruited with lovely chocolate notes backing.
